For those of you who followed the process of .xxx being accepted by ICANN then the turn
around decision by ICANN not to implement .xxx will find the independent review requested by
ICM as an interesting point in Internet governance.
Maybe we will find out whether the US government really did interfere with the decision or wether ICANN genuinely realised they made a mistake.
The decision could set a new benchmark with Internet governance and could possibly have
adverse effects on ICANN the organisation. If ICANN were found to be influenced by a
government or any other external organisation, then this may give the UN a genuine argument
to remove ICANN from its responsibilities. Nevertheless, ICANN have a new chairman and several new board members, perhaps the decsion will also be internally reviewed.
I neither supported nor opposed the application. I would have supported the application if all pornography could only reside in the .xxx domain and no where else. Then children and others with no care for pornography would not accidentally access adult material by typing in a name in an address, or in any other innocent way. It would also reduce or increase the defense of people who are reprimanded for accessing pornography at work whether innocently or intentionally.
This would naturally assist in the elimination of child pornography as the relevant software would identify images outside of the .xxx .
