Te Kete o Karaitiana Taiuru (Blog)

Kia ora Yahoo/Xtra

OMG, i just logged into my Yahoo email account, which i always use the English language when using the service. In fact i have never used the words “Kia ora”. But tonight i noticed the greeting said “Kia ora (my username)” when i logged in at the http://nz.yahoo.com/?p=us site.

Does this happen for all Yahoo email accounts accessed from a NZ IP address, or is it a dictionary check on Māori words in user names ? I wonder what would happen if someone inadvertently has a Maori login ID and gets a big ‘Kia ora” from Xtra/Yahoo ??.

For once i will give Xtra/Yahoo NZ brownie points for recognising we live in a country with 3 official languages.

Kia ora rā Xtra/Yahoo NZ.

I don’t know about other Yahoo properties, but I use flickr a great deal, and whenever I go to the homepage (logged in) I get greeted with a welcome in a random language, just now it was Hungarian:

    Szia Stuart Yeates!
Now you know how to greet people in Hungarian!
