Google Māori is live and functional

Google Māori is accessed via the google.co.nz page. Alas, do I note that there are still macrons missing on the word “Māori”.

It is refreshing to see it finally go live after the several years it took to get there.

One important thing i have noticed that nobody has mentioned, is that there is still a lot of translating left to complete:
AdWords API static documentation (0% complete)
Groups Beta (3% complete)
Main Site Help Pages (10% complete)
Picasa2 (0% complete)
User Distributed Search (xlb) (100% complete)
Wireless (17% complete)
Wireless Transcoder (0% complete) .

Hopefully all of the translators have not lost momentum and will complete the project.

Picasa2 is relatively simple to complete with just over 2700 translations with many of them having already been used in other projects.

It appears as though the Google Translation tools have been made more user friendly.

    Kia ora Karaitiana,

    Tautoko katoatia ōu whakaaro nei.

    As we start to come down from all the activities of Maori language week we should be aware that a lot of work is still needing to be done.

    This especially applies to the Google interface. All that has been translated is the basic search screen. There are errors in here that undoubtly will surface that need to be corrected (as in the word Maori). Aside from these Te Reo Māori does not yet appear in the settings for the preferred interface language. It is not available if you are using igoogle and gmail is not available with a Maori language skin. That's just in terms of the interface.

    What would be really great would be if the Search engine was able to return documents only written in Maori, or even better documents that were most relevant to Māori people (whether they were written in te reo Māori or English).

    Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to work on some of these things in the future. But then my track record isn't too good, I was first approached about Google over 7 years ago, and if it wasn't for the efforts of people like yourself through NMIS, Potaua & others, and ultimately Te Taura Whiri, getting this far would have taken longer.

    Mind you 7 years ago Google wasn't as relevant as it is today!

    Such a search engine is feasible and beta version available at http://www.kimi.maori.nz .

    Unfortunately my limited resources are not enough to complete it alone.
